Hurricane Season

The Stories behind the songs.

Somethin’ Got to Give – Is the first song on the EP, Hurricane Season. I had this song for a long time. It had totally different music until the beginning of 2019. I had changed the composition and some of the lyrics in the second verse too. In the second verse I had originally had the lyric, I am John Wayne tough, and I don’t give up. I changed it to, I am Jim “Razor” Sharp tough and I don’t give up. You see, Jim “Razor” Sharp, is a Bull rider, and I thought it would go better with the imagery of taking life by the horns.

Hard Luck Club – I used to play this foot stompin’ rocker tune with my friends in a band a long time ago. I like the idea that is reinforced in the chorus, that even though it feels like life is kicking your ass, you still have a place to go and have some kind of support. The Hard Luck Club, will let you in…

Hurricane Season – Inspired by the Hurricane drink and Mardi Gras. The title track of the EP is another song I had for a long time. I was thinking that I would have called the EP, Somethin’ Got to Give, but I heard a song that changed my mind. It wasn’t exactly one particular song, but several. I was at a party one night and the DJ was mixing in this same dance beat for every song. A lot of people were out on the dance floor. I figured I’d try to write something with that same repetition in the verse. As I was messing around with this idea, I remembered this old song I had, Hurricane Season. This song had a country feel, but more for the late 1990’s then today. So, I put this newer idea to it, and it is the song I’ve recorded. Other influences on this song are, Captain Morgan’s Rum, Pat O’Brien’s Hurricane Mix, & New Orleans during Mardi Gras. I will not forget the great, Dr. John and the Mardi Gras Mambo. I saw them at the House of Blues in New Orleans in 2003. Hurricane Season was written after that trip.

Wild About You – I had received this song in November 2015. The idea was somewhat inspired after running into a friend. I knew from high school and I had not seen her for a while. I always liked her, and we had fun back in the day at parties and stuff like that. Back then, she always had a boyfriend, so I never said anything, and then she got married. I always thought she had a gorgeous smile and a great laugh. Before running into each, like the whole world, we had connected on Facebook.

Soon after I had run into her, she had posted a picture of herself, and I thought, if things were different… I would have been wild about you. I liked that. So, I started singing it. I had fun with it too! Dragging it out dramatically, really hamming it up! “I’m just wild about you baby. Everything you do, it drives me crazy. You’re the one for me, and I know I’m the one for you… I’m just wild about you, baby…”

I really liked the audacity and thought it funny to have that line in the chorus, “I know I’m the one for you...”Because, someone might think it, but would they ever really say it? I had the second verse written down for a while and hadn’t put it with anything that I liked, but it fit for this song. “If you want to have a love that runs deep. You got to risk it all, jump in with both feet…”  You see, Wild About You, is not about something I had lost. It is about taking the chance on love. It’s a gamble every time.

Back in 2015/ 2016 I played this song for some friends I was in a band with. They had asked me who the new song was about. I didn’t have a girlfriend. I said, no one in particular, keeping my secret.  It’s none of their business anyway, the nosy bastards! Just kidding. So, I recorded the first version of, Wild About You, as a single. Published it on CD Baby, in February 2016. and that’s about it. Sort of…

I bet your asking, why is new version of, Wild About You, on, Hurricane Season? Well, I’ll tell you. Sometime last year I was playing my songs once a week on Facebook Live.  I played the original version of, Wild About You. I then saw the same friend who inspired the song. She had seen the video, liked the song, and then said, “I was singing the song in the shower that morning.” She also added that, “I needed to straighten out the curtains behind me, because they were all out of whack, and messing with her OCD.”

Now, to hear that the woman who had inspired the song, without her knowing, was singing my song in the shower… Well, that was like winning some kind of music award.  I’ll tell you as a songwriter I think it’s even better! So, in putting together the, Hurricane Season EP. I decided that, Wild About You, should be on there. I did have plans to re-record, Wild About You. There were things I wanted to do differently. So, I did!

Old Angel Midnight -  I was on a kick of reading all the Beat Poets. Jack Kerouac was the one I like the most.  On the Road was my favorite. I have read it several times. I have read all of his books. I found one entitled, Old Angel Midnight. In that book it had been written that Jack Kerouac would start his writings to, The Old Angel Midnight. I don’t believe he intended them for a book. But after reading it, I had received this song. So, this song had some inspiration from one of my favorite Authors.

Hurricane Season is now available on iTunes, Amazon, & Spotify.
